How to Achieve School-life Balance

October 14, 2020

Do you want to pass your subjects with flying colors? Before doing the necessary things to ace your classes, keep in mind that conquering your education entails a lot of time, effort, and dedication. Moreover, striking a balance between your school and personal life is essential to perform well in your academics.

So, before you wallow in late nights and early mornings to reach your academic goals, it is better to know first how to prevent mental and physical exhaustion.

Are you feeling tired, irritable, and forgetful? You might be experiencing academic burnout — a negative emotional, mental, and physical reaction to prolonged study that causes exhaustion, frustration, and discouragement. Some of the most common signs of burnout are insomnia, loss of appetite, vulnerability to illnesses, anxiety, and depression.

Managing your school and personal life is indeed challenging especially now that the country is going through the COVID-19 pandemic. This is also the reason why adapting to the new normal in education which is home studying makes you vulnerable to burnout.

Do not let academic pressure and stress take a toll on your well-being! Listed below are effective tips that will help you conquer your subjects and prevent study burnout.

1. Set reasonable goals.

Create a list of your daily goals to have a clear vision of the things that you need to attain each day. Make sure that your objectives are realistic to avoid academic burnout. After all, pushing your limits to accomplish various tasks within the day will only cause fatigue. Be kind to yourself by setting smaller goals that will help you to achieve your long-term objectives. When things get tough, the things you want to achieve will be your motivation to keep going.

2. Create a study schedule.

Do you want to accomplish your schoolwork without stressing yourself out? Do your assignments and review your lessons as early as possible to avoid last-minute cramming! Plan ahead and allot time for specific school tasks. By creating a study schedule and embracing effective time management, you will learn effectively as you become more organized and confident.

Meanwhile, it is important to make sure that you take study breaks to increase your focus and reduce your stress. Use the Pomodoro Technique which is a time management method. With this, you can study for 25 minutes then take a short break for five minutes.

3. Make your health a priority.

Doing your best in school does not mean that you have to neglect your overall health. You cannot do and achieve the things that you desire if you have poor health. Get enough sleep, drink lots of water, eat nutritious meals, and do some exercise to keep your mind and body healthy.

Do not forget to look after your mental health too! If you have something in mind and need someone you can talk to, STI’s Guidance Counselors and Associates are available online.

4. Have me time.

Do not be too hard on yourself! You are doing the best you can. Always remember that it is not selfish to make time for yourself. It is necessary. Do the things that make your soul happy! It can be curling up with a good book, watching a feel-good movie, eating a mouthwatering dessert, or catching up on some sleep. You deserve a breathing space. Give yourself time to rest and recover.

Without a doubt, student life has ups and downs. There are challenges along the way that you have to overcome. As you deal with this roller coaster ride, make sure that you maintain a school-life balance so you will have a fulfilling journey. So, get ready to make the most of it!
