STI Sports Cup Back in Action

After a five-year hiatus, the STI Sports Cup roars back this school year 2024-2025—bringing the heat back to the courts. This season was nothing but a dynamic mix of competition, camaraderie, and celebration.

Held from June 18 to 27, 2025 at the Eusebio H. Tanco Gymnasium at STI College Ortigas‑Cainta, the STI Sports Cup brought together student athletes from various campuses nationwide for a thrilling competition that featured powerful volleyball spikes to buzzer‑beater basketball finishes.

Volleyball Teams Served a Powerful Match

Fierce, focused, fearless—the queens of the STI National Volleyball League did not just play the game, they owned the court. The energy was high as teams from STI College campuses competed for the national title.

STI West Negros University dominated the tournament with their unmatched coordination and hustle. The team rose to the top and secured their spot as national champions, while STI College Balagtas and STI College General Santos showed incredible grit and determination placing 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up, respectively.

The 2025 STI National Volleyball League’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), Fearl Marie A. Buquial of STI West Negros University, awarded by Mr. Peter K. Fernandez.

Hailed as the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Fearl Marie Buquial emphasized their hard work and teamwork as key to their victory. "[Malaking bagay ang] pag e-ensayo naming lahat at pag-lift up sa teammates, (Our training sessions and the way we lift each other up as teammates really made a difference),” Buquial shared.

Madith Jaylie M. Semillano, who was awarded Best Opposite Spiker, shared what she believes led to their team’s success. “The reason for our success is teamwork, both on and off the court,” she said.

Semillano also highlighted the importance of self-belief and determination, adding, “Bukod po dun, ‘yung pagpu-push sa aming sarili na kakayanin namin, manalo man o matalo, (Aside from that, we kept pushing ourselves to believe that we can do it, whether we win or lose),”

Basketball Teams Fired Up the Court

The STI National Basketball Tournament, on the other hand, took center court with fast-paced match-ups. The tournament brought together powerhouse teams who delivered incredible shots and lockdown defense.

STI West Negros University and STI College Balagtas played an intense showdown for the gold. In the bronze match, STI College Ortigas-Cainta and STI College Koronadal kept the crowd on edge, showcasing smart plays and giving it their best shot.

Evan Villanueva, shooting guard from the national champion team, STI West Negros University, reflected on the valuable lessons he gained throughout the tournament with his team. “Natutunan ko na maging isa sa team, kasi ‘yan ang pinaka-malaking bagay [sa isang team], (I learned how to truly work as one, because unity is the most important part of being in a team),” he shared.

The STI Sports Cup is more than just a competition, it is a community. It is where players become leaders, teams become a family, and every victory is shared. This year’s return proved that the passion for sports at STI College never faded—it just waited for the perfect moment to make a comeback.
